Evra sent off before game for attacking own fan

Marseille defender Patrice Evra is sent off before Thursday's Europa League game at Vitoria de Guimaraes for appearing to kick one of his side's fans.

Evra is nearly certain to face a more severe sanction from UEFA following scenes reminiscent of Eric Cantona's kung-fu kick at Selhurst Park in 1995.

Some Marseille fans had managed to get out of their section of the stands and force their way to the touchline barriers where they harangued Evra at close contact as the French global warmed up before kick-off.

The former Manchester United captain was sent off before their Europa League defeat to Guimaraes after kicking an away fan in the head.

"Pat has experience, and he must not react".

Evra, who has been criticised for his poor form this season, was warming up for the Group I fixture when the 36-year-old and his team-mates were confronted by fans - believed to be supporters of Marseille - at the front of the stand at Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques.

"An internal investigation was carried out to establish all responsible".

"Following his dismissal, the player is suspended for at least one match".

"In any case, a professional player must keep his cool in the face of provocations and insults as hard and unjustified as they are".

"Patrice is a more than experienced player and we can not respond to insults so low and so incredible because they come from one of our supporters".

Former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona received an eight month suspension after he kicked a fan at Crystal Palace.
