Jodie Whittaker to be the first female Doctor — Doctor Who

On Sunday, the BBC named actress Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor Who, making her the first woman to assume the role of one of the world's most iconic sci-fi characters on television.

She succeeds the current star, Peter Capaldi, who announced in January that he would leave after the 2017 Christmas Special.

The new Doctor is a 35-year-old mother of one who is married to American actor, Christian Contreras.

Jodie said she's "beyond excited" to begin the journey and says it's an opportunity to remember everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. The actress, who is best known for her role as Beth Latimer in Broadchurch, also starred in such films as Adult Life Skills, Attack the Block (in which she co-starred with John Boyega) and Venus. "Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role", said Chibnall, who worked with Whittaker on Broadchurch. "The 13th Doctor is on her way".

'It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be, ' she explained. The Doctor has to save humanity by fighting monsters and aliens. Playing the mother of the child murdered in the first season, Whittaker was praised for her performance for the three seasons of the series.

Creator Chris Chibnall added, "After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor".

Whittaker will premiere as the Doctor this Christmas.

Whittaker has a message for fans.

The first run of the show began in 1963 and continued until 1989.
